How Baiern became Bayern

“I-grec,” “i griega,” “Greek I”: Do you notice anything?

King Ludwig I. loved everything Greek. So 200 years ago, on October 20, 1825, he issued the so-called “Y Decree” – and thus changed the spelling of his kingdom. He removed the “i” and added a Greek ypsilon: Baiern became Bayern.

Ο Λουδοβίκος Α΄ αγαπούσε καθετί ελληνικό. Έτσι, ακριβώς πριν από 200 χρόνια, στις 20 Οκτωβρίου 1825, εξέδωσε το λεγόμενο «Διάταγμα Υ», με το οποίο άλλαξε την ορθογραφία του ονόματος του βασιλείου του. Αφαίρεσε το γράμμα „i“ και πρόσθεσε το ελληνικό Ύψιλον (Y): έτσι, από Baiern έγινε Bayern.
