Favourite Spots in Munich: The Olympic Park

There’s Always Something Happening Here
The 1972 Summer Olympics left a lasting mark on Munich. What was once a military training ground and airport became the award-winning Olympiapark, now a major attraction thanks to its sports facilities, leisure activities, and unique architecture.
If you’re planning a visit to Munich, make sure to include a stop at Olympiapark. You might have already considered it—especially since some of the biggest stars will be performing here: Robbie WIlliams, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, to name a few. They will rock the park before the stadium undergoes a major renovation in October 2025.
Speaking of renovations: The Olympic Tower is currently closed, with a reopening planned for 2026. But exciting news for sports fans—the SAP Garden recently opened, thrilling ice hockey and basketball enthusiasts alike.
Fun for the Whole Family
There’s plenty to do in Olympiapark, especially for families: The SoccArena offers indoor soccer fields for year-round play. Sea Life is home to Germany’s largest variety of sharks. At the Olympic Swimming Hall, where Mark Spitz famously won seven gold medals, you can swim almost daily. Insider tip: To the left of the main entrance, there’s a small grandstand area where you can watch daring high divers for free—a great way to get a taste of the Olympic atmosphere, all in the original 1972 design!
Events & Festivals You Shouldn’t Miss
Events and festivals are a huge part of what makes Olympiapark so special. Here are just a few highlights:
Theatron concerts 🎶
Munich’s biggest flea market at the Parkharfe 🛍️
The legendary Tollwood Summer Festival in the southern part of the park 🎪(We’ll probably write an entire blog post about these soon!)
Relax in the Green & Enjoy the View
Even in 1972, signs in Olympiapark explicitly invited visitors to sit on the grass—and that’s still encouraged today! One of the best spots? Climb Olympiaberg for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the Alps. And here’s a bonus: You can listen to stadium concerts for free from up there—not exactly a secret anymore, but still amazing!
