How to Eat a Weisswurst or: High Noon

A hearty Weißwurstfrühstück breakfast is an essential part of any visit to Munich. Even if you are on a no-meat diet, you no longer have an excuse as there are tasty vegetarian and even vegan alternatives. At least that’s what we’ve heard.😊

So, how do you eat the veal sausage? First of all, timing is crucial. In some traditional restaurants, you will only get the Weißwurst until 12 noon. As soon as the white sausage hears the 12 o'clock bell, it’s over! The reason for this can be found in the old days: in the past, when there were no fridges, the sausages had to be eaten as soon as possible after production before the heat of the day could affect them and spoil the sausage meat.

But today there are refrigerators, you say? That’s correct, of course! And so some restaurants will serve their Weißwurst as late as at 8 p.m. - while others still stick to the 12 o'clock rule. That’s what some people call tradition!

Anyway, let’s get to the point: you have successfully ordered breakfast, the Weißwurst kettle is steaming in front of you, with 2-3 sausages per person floating in it (they are counted by the piece, not in pairs as with wieners). And now? Take the first sausage our and put it on your plate. By the way, the liquid in the pot is not soup, so please don't chop the veal sausage and slurp it with the parsley water. Seriously, we have seen this happen. You carefully cut the sausage skin lengthwise before you peel the sausage meat out of its casing.

From now on, things gets easier: cut off a piece of the white sausage, dip it in sweet mustard and enjoy it with a crispy pretzel. Attention, please: if you try to order spicy mustard instead of sweet mustard, please be prepared for the waitstaff to comment loudly on your request - after that, everyone in the dining room will know you, for sure.

A Weißwurst breakfast is traditionally accompanied by a wheat beer - fortunately, there's also a non-alcoholic version, or you can have an Apfelschorle (apple spritzer) or just water, if you prefer. Coffee or tea are very unusual, whether this is breakfast or not. Guten Appetit and Prost!
