Discover Munich From Above

Marienplatz with the New City Hall is in the center of Munich

At Marienplatz, you have three opportunities to get a bird's eye view of the city, as there are three magnificent towers offering panoramic views from high above. Which tower you choose depends on your physical condition, as some of them require mastering some stairs!

Old Peter

A climb up on Alter Peter, the tower of the oldest parish church in the city St. Peter's, will reward you with a magnificent panoramic view over the whole city. On clear days, you can even see the Alps! But the way up might not be for everyone: there are 306 steps to climb if you want to get to the top, and there is no elevator inside the old walls. Of course, this also means that you will descend these 306 steps after your excursion to the skies. But unless you are physically restricted or you suffer from extreme fear of heights, you absolutely have to go up to the platform at an airy height of 56 meters! By the way: From up here, you have an excellent view of Marienplatz and the façade of the New Town Hall, including the Glockenspiel carillon. You will find the tower entrance next to the ticket booth on the south side of the tower.

Current admission prices: Adults EUR 5.00, children/young people 6-18 years EUR 2.00

South Tower of the Frauenkirche Cathedral

After being closed for ten years and hidden behind scaffolding, the south tower of the Frauenkirche now shines in new splendor and offers a state-of-the-art elevator that will take you to the top in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, it is not entirely barrier-free as you will first have to manage 86 steps of a narrow spiral staircase on foot. But the finally, the elevator door will open for you. Up in the air, you can have a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view from the very top - after all, we're not building anything inside the city center that could tower over the Frauenkirche. Enjoy an unobstructed panorama from a height of 80 meters that ranges from the historic town to the Alps! If you're not familiar with Munich, you can learn a lot from the screens set up in front of the windows that will tell you what you're looking at. Great sightseeing from high above!

Current admission prices: adults EUR 7.50, children/young people aged 7 - 16 EUR 5.50

Bell Tower in the New City Hall

This place also offers wonderful panoramic city views from a height of 85 meters. And even if you feel like you're traveling back in time to the Middle Ages: Munich's New City Hall is much younger than most people think. When it was completed in 1909, it was already equipped with central heating and, of course, electric light. This is what we call pure neo-Gothic architecture. An elevator will take you from the bottom to the top in seconds, you will only have to change into a second elevator on your way up. A visit to the City Hall tower is barrier-free, albeit with restrictions. You will find access to the elevator in the passageway to the ceremonial courtyard under the carillon, and you can get tower ascension tickets either at the Tourist Info or directly on site at the ticket office, depending on the season. We recommend that you book online.
